Bruxism is a disorder resulting from excessive tension of the masseter muscles. This leads to the so-called trismus and teeth grinding during sleep. The administration of botulinum toxin to a precisely defined place on the jaw reduces muscle tension and eliminates such symptoms.
Untreated bruxism leads to abrasion of tooth surfaces, damage to enamel and weakening the teeth. As a result, the teeth are susceptible to damage, also inflammation of the gums and inflammation of the jaw joints occurs. The patient experiences pain, tinnitus, and problems with chewing and swallowing.
The administration of botulinum toxin to appropriate muscles intentionally inhibits the transmission of acetylcholine, resulting in weakening of selected muscles and reducing increased tension.
Indications for the procedure:
- increased tension in the jaw joints,
- teeth grinding,
- tinnitus caused by bruxism, pain and inflammation of the jaw joints,
- problems with teeth, chewing and swallowing caused by bruxism.
The course of the procedure
The treatment is preceded by a medical consultation. Using a thin needle, the doctor injects the toxin into the appropriate muscles.
The effects appear after 7 days and last up to 6 months.
Post-treatment recommendations
The patient can return to their daily activities almost immediately after the procedure. It is recommended to avoid tilting your head for 6 hours after the procedure and avoiding exposure to pressure changes (e.g. airplane flight, intense exercise).
After the procedure, small injection marks may appear, which disappear within 24 hours after the procedure. There may also be a temporary tingling sensation and slight swelling.
